What a fantastic road trip to plan! Kenya has some of the most diverse and breathtaking landscapes in all of Africa. Here’s how I’d map out a memorable 17-day journey from Nairobi to Mombasa:

🗺️ Nairobi to Mombasa — 17-Day Road Trip

Days 1–2 | Nairobi

Start by exploring the capital. Key stops include:

  • Nairobi National Park — the only national park within a capital city, with lions and rhinos against a city skyline backdrop
  • David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust — world-famous elephant orphanage
  • Giraffe Centre — feed endangered Rothschild giraffes up close
  • Karen Blixen Museum — the home of Out of Africa

Days 3–5 | Maasai Mara

Head west (~5 hrs from Nairobi). This is arguably Kenya’s crown jewel.

  • World-renowned for the Great Wildebeest Migration (peak: July–October, but wildlife is spectacular year-round)
  • Big Five territory — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino
  • Hot air balloon safaris at sunrise
  • Maasai village cultural visits

Days 6–7 | Lake Nakuru & the Rift Valley

On the way back east, swing through the Great Rift Valley.

  • Lake Nakuru National Park — famous for flamingos, white rhinos, and Rothschild giraffes
  • Hell’s Gate National Park — dramatic gorges you can hike or cycle through
  • Viewpoints over the Rift Valley escarpment — among the most stunning vistas in East Africa

Days 8–9 | Amboseli National Park

Head south towards the Tanzania border (~4 hrs from Nairobi).

  • Iconic views of Mount Kilimanjaro (the world’s highest free-standing mountain) as a backdrop to elephant herds
  • Some of the best elephant photography in the world
  • Observation Hill for panoramic views of the swamps and wildlife

Days 10–11 | Tsavo West & Tsavo East

Kenya’s largest national parks are split by the Nairobi–Mombasa highway.

  • Tsavo West — Mzima Springs (hippos and crocs in crystal-clear water), Shetani lava flows, and Chaimu crater
  • Tsavo East — the famous “red elephants” (they roll in red volcanic soil), Lugard Falls, and the vast Yatta Plateau (the world’s longest lava flow)

Days 12–13 | Taita Hills & Shimba Hills

Lesser-known but rewarding stops as you near the coast.

  • Taita Hills — misty forests with endemic bird species and rare plants
  • Shimba Hills National Reserve — coastal rainforest, home to the rare sable antelope and elephant

Days 14–15 | Diani Beach

One of Africa’s most beautiful beaches, just south of Mombasa.

  • White coral sand, turquoise Indian Ocean water
  • Snorkelling and diving at Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park
  • Colobus monkey spotting in the forest behind the beach

Days 16–17 | Mombasa

End your journey in this ancient Swahili coast city.

  • Fort Jesus — a 16th-century Portuguese fortress, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Old Town Mombasa — narrow streets, Arab architecture, spice markets, and carved wooden doors
  • Nyali, Bamburi & Shanzu Beaches — perfect for a final sunset
  • Haller Park — ecological conservation success story with hippos, giraffes, and crocs

The route broadly follows a loop — west for the Mara, then south and east toward the coast — making great use of Kenya’s road network. Would you like me to plot this on a map or dive deeper into any specific stop?
