Self-drive safari in Tanzania and One way Rental.

30 Days in Tanzania’s Southern Circuit.

A budget-conscious wilderness road trip from Dar es Salaam through the untamed south, ending at Katavi’s remote floodplains near Mpanda. Six national parks. Zero crowds.

30 DAYS

6 NATIONAL PARKS

~2,600 KM DRIVEN

4×4 REQUIRED

Budget CAMP STYLE

Dar es Salaam, Nyerere NP, Mikumi NP, Udzungwa Mts NP, Ruaha NP, Kitulo NP, Katavi NP, Mpanda

BEFORE YOU GO

Trip Essentials

🚙  VEHICLE

A 4×4 Land Cruiser or similar is non-negotiable. Ensure a roof tent, high-lift jack, two spare tyres, recovery tracks, and a snorkel for river crossings. Book a one-way rental from Dar es Salaam — drop-off in Mpanda. Carry a full jerry-can; fuel is scarce beyond Mbeya.

💳  PARK FEES & PAYMENTS

All TANAPA entry fees must be paid by Visa or Mastercard only — no cash, no debit cards. Budget ~$35–$83 per adult per day, depending on the park. Always stamp in and out at every gate to avoid rescue fees.

⛺  CAMPING SETUP

Carry your own tent, sleeping bag, cooking stove, and food supplies. Public campsites provide basic toilets and washroom facilities. Special campsites are fully remote with zero infrastructure — for experienced campers only. Pre-book special sites; public sites are walk-in.

🗓️ BEST SEASON

The dry season (June–October) is ideal — roads are passable, wildlife concentrates at water sources, and Katavi peaks in spectacle. Avoid the long rains (March–May); some roads to Katavi become impassable. November–February is the shoulder season with good birding.

🧭 NAVIGATION

Download Maps. Me or OsmAnd with offline Tanzania maps. A physical road atlas isa  backup for remote areas. Track every gate stamp time. The A7 Tanzam Highway is paved; roads to Katavi beyond Mbeya are sealed but require care.

🏥 HEALTH & SAFETY

Take anti-malarial medication throughout. Carry a first-aid kit, oral rehydration salts, and a satellite communicator (SPOT or Garmin in Reach) for Katavi — cell phone signal is absent. Stock 5+ litres of water per person daily. A yellow fever certificate is required.

🔑 Always Stamp In & Out

Every gate has a stamp-in and stamp-out requirement. Forgetting to stamp out triggers a search-and-rescue response billed to you via the rental company. Even if you pre-purchased your permit, always stop at every gate.

⛽ Fuel Strategy is Critical

Fill to the maximum at every opportunity. Fuel stations become unreliable past Mbeya. Always carry a 20-litre jerry can. There is no fuel inside any of the national parks — the nearest station to Katavi is in Mpanda, 40 km from the gate.

🌙 Arrive Before Dark

Most park gates close at 6:30pm. Plan drives to arrive at your campsite well before sunset. Do not walk outside your tent or vehicle at night in any park — hippos, lions, and elephants roam camp areas freely after dark.

📡 Communication in Katavi

Katavi has no mobile signal. Bring a satellite communicator (Garmin inReach or SPOT) for emergencies. Let someone know your full itinerary. The park headquarters at Sitalike has a radio — check in with rangers on arrival.

💧Water Management

Carry a minimum of 5 litres per person per day. A quality filter (Sawyer or LifeStraw) allows you to use river water in emergencies. Stock up in every town. Public campsites may have tap water but quality is variable — always treat or filter.

🗺️ One-Way Rental Logistics

Confirm one-way drop-off terms and fees upfront with your rental company. Major operators in Dar es Salaam (Self Drive East Africa, Roadtrip Africa, Safari Masters) offer one-way rentals to Mpanda. Agree on a vehicle return point and time in writing before departure.

🏥Medical Preparation

Start anti-malarials 1–2 weeks before departure. Carry ciprofloxacin for GI illness, ibuprofen, antihistamines, and wound dressings. The nearest hospital to Katavi is in Mpanda — 40 km. Iringa has the best medical facilities on the southern circuit.

📸Best Photography Light

Golden hour lasts roughly 6:00–7:30am and 5:00–6:30pm. The light on Ruaha’s baobabs at dawn and the Katavi hippo pools at dusk are extraordinary. Park opening time is usually 6:00am — be at the gate as it opens to maximise the best light.
