Here’s your complete 18-day self-drive safari itinerary from Kigali to Entebbe — a spectacular loop through Rwanda and Uganda covering some of East Africa’s most iconic wildlife experiences.
Overview of the Route
You’ll start in Kigali, Rwanda, head to Volcanoes National Park for primates and a volcano hike, then cross into Uganda through the Southwest, working your way north through Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale, and Murchison Falls, before finishing with a rush of adrenaline at Jinja and a short drive to Entebbe.—
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Days 1–2 · Kigali, Rwanda
Arrive in Kigali and use your first day to recover from travel and explore the city. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial — a sobering and essential stop for understanding Rwanda’s modern history. Walk through the Kimironko Market, explore the Inema Arts Centre, and sample Rwandan cuisine (try isombe and brochettes). Kigali is one of Africa’s cleanest and safest capitals — it’s a genuinely pleasant city to ease into your trip.
On Day 2, pick up your self-drive 4WD (essential for the roads ahead), stock up on supplies, fuel up, and make the approximately 2.5-hour drive northwest to Musanze/Ruhengeri, the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park. Check in to your lodge and prepare permits and briefings for the next three days of activities.
Drive: ~100 km | ~2.5 hrs
Days 2–5 · Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
This is one of Africa’s most dramatic landscapes — a chain of eight volcanoes rising out of lush green forest, straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and DR Congo.
Day 3 — Golden Monkey Tracking Golden monkey tracking takes you into the bamboo forest zones on the lower slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. These endangered primates (Cercopithecus kandti) are found only in the Virunga massif and move in large, energetic troops. Tracking typically lasts 2–4 hours. The vibrant blue-gold colouring makes for spectacular photography. Permits must be booked in advance through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).
Day 4 — Bisoke Hike Mount Bisoke (3,711 m) is a challenging but extraordinarily rewarding full-day hike. The trail takes roughly 5–7 hours return and leads through dense Hagenia-Hypericum forest teeming with birdlife before opening onto the spectacular crater lake at the summit. Go prepared with hiking boots, rain gear, a packed lunch, and a guide (mandatory). The views over the Virungas and into DR Congo on a clear day are unforgettable.
Day 5 morning — free / departure afternoon. Use the morning to rest and pack, then drive across the border into Uganda.
Drive to Bwindi: ~120 km | ~4–5 hrs (via Cyanika border crossing into Kisoro, then on to Buhoma)
Days 5–7 · Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — Buhoma Sector, Uganda
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to roughly half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei). The Buhoma sector in the north of the park is the original and most established gorilla trekking area.
Day 6 — Gorilla Trekking This is the centrepiece experience of the entire trip. Permits must be booked well in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) — they cost USD 700 per person. Treks begin at 8am and can last anywhere from 1 to 8 hours, depending on where the gorilla family has moved. You are allowed exactly one hour with the gorillas once located. The physical and emotional impact of sitting metres from a silverback inan ancient forest is something most travellers describe as a life-changing encounter.
Day 7 — Community walk / Gorilla Forest walk/departure. Take a guided community or forest walk in the morning around Buhoma, or simply absorb the atmosphere of the impenetrable forest, before driving east toward Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Drive to Queen Elizabeth NP: ~95 km | ~3 hrs
Days 7–10 · Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda
Queen Elizabeth is Uganda’s most visited national park and one of the most biodiverse in Africa, with over 600 bird species and the famous tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector.
Day 8 — North Sector Game Drive (Kasenyi Plains) The Kasenyi Plains are excellent for lion, elephant, buffalo, Uganda kob, and hyena. Morning game drives are best. The park sits astride the Equator — you can stop at the marker for the classic photo.
Day 9 — Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise. This is among the best wildlife boat experiences in Africa. The 40 km channel linking Lakes George and Edward has exceptional concentrations of hippo (one of the densest in Africa), enormous Nile crocodiles, and an extraordinary diversity of waterbirds including African skimmers, goliath herons, and pied kingfishers. Afternoon departures are popular; book through your lodge or the park office.
Day 10 morning — Ishasha Sector (tree-climbing lions) Drive south to the Ishasha sector before departing. The fig trees here harbour prides of lions that have developed the unusual habit of resting in branches — a behaviour rarely seen elsewhere. Then head north toward Kibale.
Drive to Kibale: ~100 km | ~3 hrs
Days 10–12 · Kibale National Park, Uganda
Kibale protects one of East Africa’s finest tropical rainforests and is the best place in the world to track chimpanzees in the wild. With 13 primate species present, it’s also known as the “primate capital of the world.”
Day 11 — Chimpanzee Tracking Kibale’s habituated chimp communities are tracked twice daily (morning and afternoon sessions). The morning session (departing 8 am) is generally recommended. Unlike gorilla tracking, chimpanzees are fast-moving and often high in the canopy, making it an energetic and thrilling experience. You may also encounter red-tailed monkeys, olive baboons, black-and-white colobus, and L’Hoest’s monkeys.
Day 12 morning — Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. Before departing, take a guided walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary adjacent to the park. This community-run project is excellent for birds and additional primates, and is a great way to support local communities.
Drive to Murchison Falls NP: ~270 km | ~5–6 hrs via Kampala (Fort Portal – Kampala – Masindi route, or the Fort Portal – Hoima – Masindi route)
Days 12–16 · Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda
Murchison Falls is Uganda’s largest national park, covering 3,840 km², and one of Africa’s greatest wilderness areas. The Victoria Nile cuts through the heart of the park, forcing itself through a narrow 7-metre gap to create one of the world’s most powerful waterfalls.
Day 13 — North Bank Game Drive The north bank of the Nile is the prime game viewing area, with large populations of elephant, giraffe (Rothschild’s — among the most endangered subspecies), buffalo, oribi, and Jackson’s hartebeest. Lions and leopards are also regularly seen.
Day 14 — Murchison Falls Boat Cruise + Hike to the Top The 3-hour boat cruise from Paraa up to the base of Murchison Falls is one of the great wildlife experiences in Africa. The riverbanks are lined with massive Nile crocodiles and hippo pods, with elephants frequently coming to drink. Shoebill storks — one of the most sought-after birds in Africa — can be spotted on the marshy fringes. After the boat, hike the short but rewarding trail up to the top of the falls for vertiginous views.
Day 15 — Delta / Buligi Game Drive & Birding: Explore the Buligi game circuit and the Nile delta area, which is exceptional for shoebill habitat and large concentrations of mammals near the water.
Day 16 morning — final game drive, then departure. One last early morning drive before the long drive south and east to Jinja.
Drive to Jinja: ~350 km | ~5–6 hrs
Days 16–17 · Jinja — White Water Rafting on the Nile
Jinja sits at the source of the Nile, where it exits Lake Victoria, and is the adventure sports capital of East Africa.
Day 17 — White Water Rafting The Nile offers some of the best white water rafting in the world, with a series of Grade 4 and 5 rapids along an approximately 25 km stretch of river. Full-day trips are run by several operators and include all equipment, safety kayakers, lunch, and transfers. This is a brilliant and jubilant way to near the end of the trip — a full day of adrenaline on the river that defined an entire continent’s geography.
In the evening, celebrate in Jinja town with a riverside dinner — the food and craft beer scene has grown significantly in recent years.
Drive from Murchison to Jinja: ~350 km | ~5–6 hrs
Day 18 · Jinja → Entebbe
The final drive from Jinja to Entebbe is approximately 80 km and takes about 1.5–2 hours, passing through or around Kampala. You may pass through Kampala and stop for a final lunch, browse the Nakasero Market, or visit the Uganda Museum if time permits before your flight.
Drive: ~80 km | ~1.5–2 hrs
Key Logistics & Planning Notes
Permits must be booked well in advance. Gorilla permits (UWA, Uganda) and Golden Monkey permits (RDB, Rwanda) sell out months ahead, especially in peak season (June–August and December–February). Secure these before booking anything else.
Vehicle: A high-clearance 4WD is non-negotiable. The road from Kisoro to Buhoma and tracks within the parks require serious ground clearance, particularly in the wet season. A rooftop tent is optional but convenient for Murchison and Queen Elizabeth.
Border crossing: The Cyanika border post between Rwanda and Uganda (Musanze to Kisoro) is the most logical crossing for this route. Bring your East Africa Tourist Visa if eligible, which covers Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda in one visa.
Fuel: Carry a jerry can with extra fuel when heading into Murchison Falls — fuel availability can be patchy in remote areas.
Best time: The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer the easiest game viewing and most reliable road conditions. The long rains (March–May) make some park tracks challenging, but the forests are lush and beautiful.
Distances & total driving: The full route is approximately 1,400–1,600 km. Build in proper rest days — don’t try to drive and do an activity on the same afternoon if avoidable.
This is a genuinely extraordinary itinerary — from volcano hikes and golden monkeys in Rwanda, to mountain gorillas, tree-climbing lions, chimpanzees, the thundering Murchison Falls, and a final burst of white water on the Nile. Enjoy every kilometre of it.
