    About Zambia

Zambia is a landlocked country situated in South Central Africa. It has a population of approximately twelve million people of which nearly half live in urban areas. A third of Zambia is allocated as National Park and Game Management Areas. There are nineteen national parks and no one is allowed to live permanently within the national park boundaries. A large country inhabited by relatively few people in the rural areas makes Zambia a superb wilderness location.

Zambia lies on the high Central African Plateau which varies in height between four to six thousand feet above sea level. In the areas where the plateau is dissected by large rivers such as the Zambezi and the Luangwa, the land drops down to two thousand feet above sea level. The Luangwa Valley is at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley that runs down from East Africa. Most of Zambia is hilly undulating ground with larger hills in the northeast and vast escarpments dropping down into the Zambezi and Luangwa valleys.

Go Camping in Livingstone, South Luangwa, Kafue National Park, Lower Zambezi, Luambe, Lukusuzi Liuwa Plain, West Lunga, Sioma Ngwezi, and Nyika Plateau. Stay in the wilderness at campsites located in these parks. Pick up a Land Cruiser with a single or two rooftop tents and drive your adventure. Stop spending too much on your holidays by choosing a camping trip.

    Where to go

Kasanka National Park is found in the Chitambo District of central Zambia. With 390 km2, it is one of the smallest national parks in Zambia. This park is managed by a private-public partnership, funded by Kasanka Trust Ltd in partnership with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife.

Over 114 mammal species have been recorded here, these include elephants, hippos, and Sitatunga among others. Other species have been reintroduced in the park and the most successful are zebras and buffaloes. Close to ten million African straw-colored fruit bats migrate to the Mushitu swamp evergreen forest in the park for three months from October to December, making it the largest mammal migration in the world. Over 471 bird species have been identified in the park.

Puku is the most plentiful antelope and grazes on the grassy floodplains throughout the Park. Common duiker, bush-buck, warthog, Vervet monkey and Kinda baboon (related to the yellow baboon (Papio Cynocephalus)) are common throughout the park and hippo can frequently be encountered in Kasanka’s rivers and lakes, including in Lake Wasa.

South Luangwa National Park is found in the Eastern part of Zambia in the valley of the Luangwa River. It is a world-renowned wildlife haven. The concentrations of the Wildlife in the Lagoons of the meandering Luangwa River are the most intense in Africa. Hippos and crocodiles provide a lifeline for one of the greatest diversities of habitat and wildlife in this region. It supports over 60 species of mammals and 400 species of birds. Luangwa River supports large populations of giraffes, elephants, and Cape buffaloes among others. Luangwa National Park is best famous for African walking safaris. The Luangwa National Park is bordered by a steep escarpment on the west and to the east, it’s the Luangwa River. The Luangwa Valley lies at the tail end of the Great African Rift Valley system, which extends 4,000 km all the way from the Red Sea down to the Pungwe River mouth in Mozambique. In the Northern is Muchinga Escarpment which slopes down to the river, lying mostly on its western bank. The eastern bank of the Luangwa river is in Eastern Province. It has an access to the park only from that side, it is usually thought of as being wholly in Eastern Province.
