Insurance Fraud Investigator The Utah Insurance Department is seeking a new Insurance Fraud Investigator . The Insurance Fraud Division offers a competitive 11‑step pay plan. Current law‑enforcement officers (LEOs) will be placed in the appropriate step based on their years of experience if hired. A hiring bonus may be offered for successful candidates transferring from another law‑enforcement agency. Effective March 2026 the pay‑plan steps range from $36.20 to $51.69 per hour, increasing by 2.5% in July 2026. Maintain detailed inspection or investigation records, prepare reports, search warrants, subpoenas, and other documents associated with these investigations, and attend to other related administrative requirements. Ensure compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and agency rules, standards and guidelines. Receive, research and respond to incoming questions or complaints; provide information, explain policy and procedures, and/or facilitate resolution. Act as an expert witness. Give testimony and/or recommendations in court cases and/or hearings. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Certified as a law‑enforcement officer (LEO) by the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) in Utah. Licensed to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA 53‑3‑202(1)(a). Fluent in the Spanish language (able to speak, read, and write in Spanish). Preferred Qualifications A minimum of 3 years of experience investigating white‑collar or financial crimes, or cases of fraud. A bachelor’s degree or higher in criminal justice, finance, accounting, or an additional 3‑year audit experience (6 total years). An associate’s degree in criminal justice, finance, accounting, or an additional 3‑year audit experience (8 total years). Financial crimes investigative experience. Technical training in the insurance field. Other criminal investigations experience. Computer skills. Report‑writing experience. Ability to read and comprehend detailed and complex documents. Tactful interviewing skills. Organizational and time‑management skills. Ability to work independently and as a team. Additional Preferences Additional points will be given to applicants who fluently speak, read, and write in the Spanish language. This would be accompanied by a $5,000 hiring bonus if selected and hired, as well as a $3,000 annual bonus. About The Role Location – Salt Lake County, UT Background Check Required – Successful pass of a criminal history check. Drug Test Required – No Schedule Code – B – Competitive Career Service Physical Requirements The work may require considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, defending oneself and/or others against physical attack. Working Conditions Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc. This position involves use of full police powers which includes carrying a firearm, making arrests, issuing citations, conducting search warrants, traffic stops of wanted persons, etc. Other Information Insurance Fraud Division investigators participate in the Public Safety Retirement System. Individuals who are placed in this job will be designated as a member of the Public Safety Retirement System. DHRM rules apply for promotions/transfers. Employment is contingent upon passing an extensive background check. Work Schedule: Monday—Friday with a 4‑day weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday) every other week! The Agency The Insurance Fraud Division (IFD) is a targeted law‑enforcement agency working under the State of Utah Insurance Department. IFD investigations cover a wide variety of insurance fraud and associated crimes including consumer fraud, medical fraud, insurance agent fraud, workers' compensation fraud, and bail bond fraud. Investigations range from single‑defendant claims to organized criminal syndicates. Investigators for the IFD typically work four ten‑hour shifts each week and alternate days between two squads providing a four‑day weekend followed by a two‑day weekend. Investigators work 7:00 am to 6:00 pm with holidays and weekends off. A state vehicle is provided for commute to and from home to the office location in Salt Lake City and for use while on duty. Off‑duty use is not authorized. All this is in addition to the state's comprehensive and competitive benefits package!
